Paharpur Buddhist Bihar, Badalgacchi, Naogaon
Paharpur Buddhist Vihara or somapura situated at Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon district. It is the most beautiful sights in the Naogaon district. It is also known as Somapur Bihar or Paharpur Buddhist Monastery. The modern name Paharpur but the ancient name was somapura. In the seventh century (770-810 AD) Buddhist Pala royal dynasty was established. Christian eighth and ninth centuries, the second and the third king of the Pala dynasty Dharmapala and his son Devapala founded the great empire Bangla, Bihar to Kannauj. Advances era of Buddhist religion in their patronage Paharpur Buddhist monasteries and temples developed in this country. Historical and geographical reasons, the monastery ruins but it still stands turn out to be the beautiful convent of Asia’s greatest Buddhist Vihara. Paharpur Buddhist monastery had 177 rooms for Buddhist monks. A total 70.31 acre of land located on the Paharpur Buddhist Bihara. Here has a museum, rest house and several administrative buildings build by the Department of Archaeology of Bangladesh. In 1934 the excavation by the Department of Archaeology found Satyapir’s Vita and the rooms beyond the temple and the whole archaeological site was discovered. The main promenade in the center and surrounded by 198 living rooms, wide entrance, numerous mass entertainments, small temple and pool is located. The temple is 357 feet in length from north to south and 314 feet in width from east to west. The convent located in the middle. Interesting architectural and historical importance of the area of the Paharpur Buddhist Bihara heritage is recognized as one of the oldest in the world today. Recently it has been listed a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
In the Paharpur stone plate 63 statues can be seen. In the temple stone plate there many different animal statues can be seen. The Bihar is about 72 feet high from the ground. Paharapur is noted as a mini version of the ancient Nalanda University. Here are many domestic and foreign tourists come every year.
